Your Hearing Test – What to expect
If you’ve never had a hearing test before and don’t know what to expect, it is understandable to be a little apprehensive, but you can be assured that our Audiologists will make the experience a positive one. Hearing tests take about an hour and are non-invasive and painless – you may just need to concentrate a little to hear some very quiet sounds, but that’s as difficult as it gets!
All our hearing tests and healthcare checks are free if you are aged 50 or over – and it is recommended that you have your hearing checked every year.

Getting to know you
Your Audiologist will take you through what happens step by step, go through any concerns you may have about your hearing and answer any questions you have about your hearing health and the hearing solutions that could help you.
Understanding your concerns, and when you feel you have problems hearing, is obviously important in being able to advise you on which hearing solutions might suit you best, and crucially, provide the most benefit.
And if you feel you might need some extra support during your hearing check, we welcome you to bring along a family member or friend with you.
Checking your ears
Your Audiologist will check the health of your ears, using an otoscope to look inside your ears. This enables them to see if you have any blockages, wax build-up or ear infection that may be affecting your hearing.
And if they do find anything that needs investigating further, they will make a referral for you to your GP.
Testing your hearing
To test your hearing, your Audiologist will pop a pair of headphones over your ears and play a series of sounds through them. You simply need to push a button every time you hear a sound and this informs your Audiologist how well you hear different sound levels and pitches.
You will then be asked to listen out for a series of words and sounds, at different pitches, volumes and intensities – much as you would hear in an everyday conversation. It can be helpful at this point to have a family member or friend with you as a familiar voice, in checking how well you understand speech.
Talking through your results
Once your hearing test is complete, your Audiologist will share the results with you by showing you an audiogram – this is just a graph that plots your hearing. The audiogram will show you whether you have any hearing loss, and if you do, the level of loss, which can be mild, moderate, severe or profound.
Advising you on your options
Your Audiologist will advise you on steps you can take to help manage your hearing loss and protect your hearing in the future.
If it is recommended that you wear hearing aids, they will talk you through the hearing solutions available to you.
Demonstrating the hearing solutions available
Your Audiologist will demonstrate the level of hearing you could achieve from your various options. You are under no obligation to purchase a hearing solution, and you can be assured that the hearing advice you’re given, as an independent audiology provider, is free and unbiased.
